Paris swaps sand for sea. The challenge: paddle around Palm Jumeirah, about 16 km. The calm start turns into a slog on the outer crescent, where waves push him back and he keeps clear of the rocks.

Then a fast tour of Dubai Marina and the coast with Hero Adventure, past the Burj Al Arab, before heading to Abu Dhabi, where the water is almost lake-flat and the islands feel tropical and empty. On one, Paris sees Arabian gazelles in the wild for the first time.

The finale is the Victory Team, whose Class 1 powerboats carry two engines of more than 1,000 horsepower each and, the team say, reach around 160 mph. Paris gets the last ride round Port Rashid before the season.
