Canyoning, or wadi bashing on foot, follows a narrow mountain valley downstream. In the UAE that means the wadis of the Hajar range, mostly in Ras Al Khaimah and around Hatta and Fujairah. Expect wet rock, boulder scrambles, jumps into pools where a guide says it is safe, and short swims.

Where

Wadi Shawka is the most accessible spot and the one Paris has done. Guided trips there are typically a few hours long and a few kilometres in distance.

What to bring

  • Shoes with grip that can get wet
  • Quick-dry clothes and a dry bag for your phone
  • Plenty of water and snacks
  • A helmet if the route includes climbs or jumps

Who it suits

You need to be comfortable in water and able to scramble on rocks. Beginners should go with a guide who knows the wadi's current state.

Flash floods: rain far upstream can send water down a dry wadi in minutes. If rain is forecast anywhere in the mountains, stay out of wadi beds.

FAQ

Is canyoning in the UAE safe?

With a guide, in dry weather and in the cooler months, it is a manageable adventure. The main hazard is flash flooding after rain.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes. Most routes include short swims through pools.
