Wadi Shawka, often translated as "powerful valley", runs through the Hajar foothills of Ras Al Khaimah from the village of Khari. Its centre is Shawka Dam, which has a recreation area with barbecue spots and a children's play area. Paris has canyoned here, sliding, scrambling and swimming through its pools.

Trails

Visit Ras Al Khaimah lists beginner loops of about 3 to 5 km and longer routes of close to 10 km. The well-known Dam Mountain Trail is a 10 km loop. The ground is loose shale in places, so wear proper shoes.

Canyoning

Canyoning means following the wadi itself: walking on wet rock, scrambling over boulders and swimming short sections of fresh-water pools. Go with a guide the first time; see canyoning in the UAE.

Flash floods: rain far upstream can send water down a dry wadi in minutes. If rain is forecast anywhere in the mountains, stay out of wadi beds.

Getting there

The UAE environment ministry describes the route via the Sharjah–Kalba road (E102) and the Maliha–Fujairah road (E84), then exit toward Esfai. A normal car reaches the dam; a high-clearance vehicle helps beyond it.
