The main hiking areas

  • Ras Al Khaimah: Jebel Jais and Wadi Shawka, where Paris has hiked and canyoned.
  • Hatta: Dubai's mountain enclave, with 35 km of marked trails across four routes according to Visit Hatta.
  • Fujairah: wadis and coastal ridges on the Gulf of Oman side.

Packing list

  • Water: more than you think
  • Sun hat, sunscreen and a light long-sleeve layer
  • Shoes with grip for loose rock
  • Phone with offline maps and a charged battery

Rules of thumb

Hike in the cooler months, start early, tell someone where you are going and turn back if weather changes.

Flash floods: rain far upstream can send water down a dry wadi in minutes. If rain is forecast anywhere in the mountains, stay out of wadi beds.
