Before oil, pearling was the backbone of the UAE's economy. Divers worked on a single breath with a stone weight, a rope and a nose clip. Cultured pearls ended the trade in the 20th century.

Ways to try it

  • Pearl farm tour: at Suwaidi Pearl Farm in Ras Al Khaimah, Paris saw the old tools and opened oysters for a pearl of his own.
  • Freediving course: Paris took the PADI freediver course with Divers Down, reaching 10 metres; the certificate needs 16.

More heritage: camel racing. More diving: MV Dara.
