Al Jazirah Aviation Club Map: Learning to fly a light aircraft over Ras Al Khaimah Enquire / book More episodes Related: paramotoring first flight
Long before airlines made Dubai a global hub, the region had flight dreamers: the episode opens with Abbas Ibn Firnas, who attempted flight in the 9th century. Paris's own attempt is more structured. He enrols in the Light Sport Aircraft course at Al Jazirah Aviation Club in Ras Al Khaimah.
Ground school covers the limits of the aircraft (plus four and minus two G, and no aerobatics) and a point every student pilot learns the hard way: fly regularly, or skills fade and have to be relearned.
After his first flight, Paris moves on to cross-country navigation, with routes that stretch to Fujairah on the east coast. By the end his instructor rates him close to going solo. The club says more women are signing up every year.
