Paramotoring is the simplest way to put a human in the sky: a paraglider wing overhead, a small engine on your back and nothing else. Paris begins the APPI PPG licence course with Sky School UAE in Ras Al Khaimah, and the first lesson is not flying at all but ground handling.
He spends hours raising the wing, turning to face the wind and steering with the toggles while the instructors shout corrections. Next comes towing, where a line pulls him aloft so he can feel the wing without an engine. Only then does the motor go on.
The flights happen about 45 minutes' drive into the desert, where the ground is flat and empty. Paris describes hearing only wind, and he spots the Burj Khalifa as a pinprick at sunset. He logs three flights in his first week. The licence needs 15.
