  • Fast: jet skis, powerboats
  • Skill: wakeboarding, kitesurfing, paddleboarding
  • Calm: kayaking, snorkelling
  • Under water: scuba, freediving
  • Your own boat: yachts and boat clubs

The rules

Dubai's maritime authority licenses water sports and jet ski rental centres. Among its rules: rental centres must not rent jet skis to anyone under 16, must brief every renter, and jet skis may not be used after sunset. Life vests are compulsory.

Paris's own day on the water is in Adventures by sea.

Picking by personality

Not sure where to start? If you like control, take the kayak or a paddleboard. If you want speed with someone else driving, book a passenger ride or a powerboat trip. If you want a skill to bring home, take lessons: wakeboarding and freediving are both easy to start and take years to master.

New for this season

Pool options have grown: see Deep Dive Dubai for scuba and snorkelling in a sunken city, and freediving. On the coast, Paris's own picks are kayaking the Palm and the shipwreck dive.

FAQ

Are water sports open all year?

Yes, though midday summer heat is intense; book morning or late-afternoon slots.
