Dubai
The base for most visitors: skydiving over the Palm, desert safaris, water sports and, inland, Hatta in the Hajar Mountains.

Abu Dhabi
The capital has Yas Island's theme parks and race circuit, mangrove kayaking and the full day-trip guide.

Ras Al Khaimah
The UAE's adventure emirate on our show: the Jebel Jais zipline, Hajar hikes, Wadi Shawka and flying lessons.

Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah and Ajman
Umm Al Quwain is home to the MV Dara wreck. Sharjah's east coast enclave of Kalba and the town of Dibba Al Hisn reach the Gulf of Oman.

Fujairah
The only emirate almost entirely on the Gulf of Oman, with clearer water for snorkelling and diving: see Fujairah.

Beyond the border
Musandam is part of Oman, so a trip there means crossing an international border.

Choosing a base
Dubai is central: Abu Dhabi's Yas Island is about an hour away, Ras Al Khaimah's mountain about two hours, and Fujairah's coast is across the Hajar Mountains. Instead of moving hotels every day, many people stay in Dubai and do day trips, then add one night in the mountains or desert. Compare the options in our Yas Island and Jebel Jais camping guides.
